September 25, 2024 – AAFD extends its deepest gratitude to Governor Gavin Newsom for signing Senate Bill 919 into law, a landmark bill establishing the registration of franchise brokers. The AAFD also thanks Senator Tom Umberg for his leadership in authoring and guiding this important piece of legislation through the California Legislature.
Senate Bill 919 represents a significant step toward increasing transparency and accountability in the franchise industry. By introducing a registration requirement for franchise brokers, the bill strengthens protections for franchisees, ensuring that prospective franchise buyers receive fair and accurate information when making critical business decisions.
“It has been a privilege for the AAFD work alongside the Coalition of Franchisee Associations (CFA) and the International Franchise Association (IFA) as cosponsors of SB-919,” said Richard Stroiney, AAFD CEO. “This bill exemplifies how franchisees and franchisors can collaborate to create a more equitable and transparent franchising environment, ultimately benefiting both parties.”
With SB-919 set to be implemented in 2026, the AAFD is eager to continue its work with stakeholders and industry leaders to ensure the smooth enactment of the bill and to further enhance the franchise system for all involved.
