January Was a Great Month for Franchise Hiring in the U.S.

Posted on Date: Mar 4, 2019

While the U.S. government grounded to a halt during the longest government shutdown in our country’s history, franchise businesses continued to hire at an impressive clip. According to the ADP National Franchise Report, franchise hiring climbed by 33,000 in the month of January, 2019.

This represent a 2.1% year-over-year growth, which is especially strong considering the tight labor market. Propelling these results were 36,000 jobs added to the restaurant industry as well as 2,600 jobs added to auto parts & dealers. Franchises in the business services sector and accommodations sector saw job declines of -2,600 and -1,400 respectively.

Did the government shutdown help propel this big boost in franchise employment? The ADP report doesn’t address this question, but it’s possible that government contractors weren’t willing to miss a paycheck and sought employment elsewhere. We will have to see what the numbers look like for February and the first quarter of 2019 to deduce the full impact from the shutdown.
